Look. See. Reflect... Ruminations on Nature in Zimbabwe

Growing up, I devoured books by naturalists – legends like Gerald Durrell and David Attenborough among them – and aspired to be like them. With words and a smattering of black and white photos, they painted images in my mind of exotic places and astounding creatures. I’d read a bit, pause to imagine the sights, sounds and smells, and then immerse myself in the pages again. They inspired me to look more closely at the world around me and appreciate the drab and inconspicuous along with the large and flashy.

In the modern world of digital consumerism, the glossy and loud rise to the top of the click-and-like stakes. We’re fed a diet of popular instant content – slowing our scrolling for just a couple of seconds to look at a compelling photo while skimming past the caption. Video clips swarm our feeds, begging us to click on a titbit of something enticing. Within seconds, we move on to the next item, barely registering what we’ve seen.

But I think we’re missing something – that slow and deliberate consumption of content that we actively seek out. That’s why I decided to start this blog. I can’t hold a candle to my childhood heroes, but I wanted to create something more intentional; a small pocket on the internet where I can share glimpses of the Earth’s natural wonders.

Wildlife, the outdoors, ecology and photography are among my great loves, and I am privileged to have access to some of the world’s most incredible biodiversity on my doorstep. I take photos of Nature because it brings me joy, and I delight in observing and capturing the intricacies of living things in their environment. I want to share some of this wonder with my readers – shining a spotlight on the wildlife that shares our planet.

So, what can you expect from these “ramblings”? My aims are to showcase some of our lesser known and overlooked wildlife, share insights from a conservation and scientific standpoint, and bring you a little closer to the outdoors in Zimbabwe. You may find dustings of opinion and anecdotal meanders in my musings. My content will be authentic and considered and designed to encourage you to appreciate the “small stuff” nearby as much as the “big-and-hairies” in wild spaces.

I hope you will visit intentionally and regularly and take a moment or two to pause and see Nature through my lens and my words. Look. See. Reflect. And if my ramblings offer you a moment of joy, a spark of inspiration, or a new way to see the world, then I will feel that I have done Nature a small service!
